Question Need Help on custom kb for 8051

Ok, I'm very new to this so I apologize in advance.

As a project my groupin coll is creating an 8051 based digital programmaable timer. We need to design a custom keyboard that will read in the amount of time the user wants to set his timer to run for.

How do I go about doing this? We have more or less settled on how to program it to run for the requisite duration, just need to know how to read the data from the keyboard into the 8051 / accumulator.

Yes, we've tried Google - extensively - but it wasnt worth it. Books arent helping either, we've been through a few of those too.

    Thanks.
