partition the hard drive to three partitions.
I have each cam recording to its own partition, each is 4gig.
I plan to have it separate from the main system.
Also, to help eliminate battery problems I am installing a second battery and a capacitor.

the "security system" will be connected to the capacitor so it will survive cranking.

cooling? what the cams? i got them mounted on top of the dash

    main multimedia system computer #1
abit kg7raid mobo with 1gig memory
    maxtor 120gig
usb dvd+rw in the dash with xenarc
    usb gps
    netgear wifi
    powered by inverter 350w

    security system setup, computer #2
    epia m10000
    maxtor 20gig hd
    2 logitech usb cams
    power supply pw-70
    powered by radio shack #273-1827

tested with winxp pro using virtualdub to capture video from both cams at the same time. both cams were recording video and audio at 22fps each had a 4gig partition and can record from each cam for about a week.
I am still testing this setup and it is not installed yet. As soon as I am done, I will post.
Didn't see if you ever mentioned what kind of car you will be mounting, but I think it would be safe to toss out a warning about potential overdraw on your power system. One carPC is enough to knock some cars right out of commission, but two of them is almost a surefire way to get some problems you might not have foreseen, especially using an inverter. If you need to use two systems I would recommend using direct DC-DC power supplies for both, to maximize efficency and minimize power draw.

That would be my two cents' worth, and just think: you were here to see them fall!

I did. It is pretty fun:

I used to have more videos before the HD crashed. Some good ones and night and driving through the desert.

I am installing both in my 2001 crown vic. Got the space.

For power I already upgraded the alternator from stock 70amp to 140amp police alternator. The 70amp was having problems keeping juice to the entire system at night with the lights on sitting at traffic lights. Upgrading the alternator really cleaned up alot of electrical problems.

John, I'm working with a Grand Marquis. I'd love to hear what else you've done with your car... seeing as how our's are almost twins.

not trying to bash your thread but...

i dont see the point of having a security system (PC THAT IS) is your car, if someone steals ya multimedia pc, which the video will be recorded by the security pc, im sure they will search ya car and find the security pc as well and take that, personally i would invest the money spent on the security pc on a good alarm.

but still your idea sounds cool u just have to make sure u have all angles covered.
    It aint no family car.
