Has anyone hooked a webcam to their carputer? I searched but

could only find references to rear view ideas. I want to have a webcam on the dash for when I track the car, etc...

What would be a good camera for this? 30max fps decent enough for a video of a drive? Do the USB camera's work ok?

I am in the process of connecting two webcams to my carputer. I plan to use them for video/audio security. They are the logitech quick cams. I have tested them with a epia m10000 with a 20gig hd. Having both recording video and audio at the same time to two different partitions on the hard drive, I am able to get 22 fps from each camera.

Considering that NTSC movies are 29.97fps... yeah, 30 is enough.

this is kind of similar but not.....is there a way to hook up 3-4 cams and record/snapshot all of them (these cams might be video tho not usb)

There's PCI cards that let you do just that. They're used usually for CC security cameras.

I too am using a cam for security. But it's on a servo, that turns towards motion. It's set to record 30 sec. of video towards the motion if there is any type of vibration through the car. The only problem I have with this system is that you can't let your car sit for more than 2 days because it will KILL the battery.

Yes it is rear facing but a similar set up could be used to face forward.

the security system i am installing is separate from the carputer. Yes "TWO" computers in my car.

main multimedia system computer #1
abit kg7raid mobo with 1gig memory
maxtor 120gig
usb dvd+rw in the dash with xenarc
usb gps
netgear wifi
powered by inverter 350w

security system setup, computer #2
epia m10000
maxtor 20gig hd
2 logitech usb cams
power supply pw-70
powered by radio shack #273-1827

tested with winxp pro using virtualdub to capture video from both cams at the same time. both cams were recording video and audio at 22fps each had a 4gig partition and can record from each cam for about a week.
I am still testing this setup and it is not installed yet. As soon as I am done, I will post.

all i have to say is that sounds absolutly sweeeeeet

2 questions -

1.can u view that video from another computer (via the internet, or a wlan or something)

2. when you say you can record from each cam for ~a week, is that to just to one 4 gig partition? (including two video/audio captures ...from each webcam)
