Thread: USB video input cable

I had something similar, but there were no drivers available for NT/2K/XP, so you might want to confirm that drivers for your OS are available.

This one has drivers for XP, 2K, ME, and 98SE. I tried it out for a different application and it went back a few days later. Quality was not great, and it kept losing connection. It might have been a faulty unit, but I was thoroughly unimpressed.

This was the unit that we ultimately went with:

It's bus-powered, and it supports s-video as well as standard RCA. Plus it's an ADS unit, and they're a major step up from X10 hardware IMHO.

Why dont you just use the video-in connection on your Lilliput? Just press the AV select button to change the input source when you want to view the output from the camera.

Or just trigger that switch to a different input via a relay fed from the reverse lights.....?

I think it would be pretty simple and I have this planned for my install, just awaiting customs to clear my shipment from cartft.com

What you would need to do to get the reverse camera working without intervention would be. ie: click the shifter into reverse and the screen automaticaly shows you what is behind you

1) Hack open the screen case and figure out which switch switches to the input that the reverse camera is on

2) Find out if the switch is a "momentary" or "continous" type

3) Plug a small relay to the reverse lights of the car

4) Set up the relay so that when energised by the current in the reverse lights

5) the switch in the display from #1&2 is triggered by #4

6) This of course assumes that you want to see where you are reversing

7) the confusing part is the thread title doesnt have much to do with the current state of the thread

Problem is, at least with a Lilliput, the button that switches inputs is momentary type of button and actually pressing it makes Lilliput cycle between 3 different signal inputs - VGA, video-in 1 and video-in 2. As far as I know Lilliput otherwise does not switch to "live" input automatically which makes things yet more complicated.

Im looking for something with software, incase I decide I want to film my drive home.

Any good webcam (USB 2 pref) comes with software that allows you to do just that, and it will run in a smallish window on the desktop normally 320x300 or so, then it saves it as an mpeg / avi etc to your hard drive as you drive, I plan on mounting at least 1 webcam on the exterior of the vehicle for track days etc
