hey i dont know if you overlooked this by accident.....but are you running an active USB cable, or a USB repeater from the adapter to the PC?? Maybe an error in data/power sync due to the length of the USB is causing the device to be unrecognized
You got SP1?
Winxp without SP1 does some funny things with usb stuff

This is the product that I have (You may need to select UK as your country, then try the link again, as it does something funny with picking UK/US based on cookies)Originally Posted by thepogcbr900rr
It comes with a mains adapter, which has a 4 pin Molex, and a little 2.5mm power plug, both of which I cut off, and attached to the regulated 12/5V coming from my Opus.
Of course before you try cutting things apart, make sure you check polarity with a multimeter before connecting ANYTHING!

I have been looking into getting one of these and have a few questions. I looked at the pictured on Newegg's site and I see the power adapter that comes with it. I know that goes from the power source to the adapter. So, is that molex connector used to power the drive or do you need to run a power line from the psu to power the drive? Also, say I have a DVD drive that I want to use to play audio CDs. Is the sound transfered through the USB or do I have to run cables from the soundcard to attach to the drive?
EDIT: Also, if I want to play DVDs through this will I need USB2.0 or would 1.1 be fast enough?
EDIT2: Ok, I found out that it powers the drive too, but what about the sound? Does it go through the USB? I know people are using these things so I'd really like to hear some detail if anyone would like to help out.
Thanks
hmmmm. my 2 bobs worth.
ebay/trademe sux on these things.
i can buy a new one cheaper than what these guys sell them there.
I just bought a usb2 case. entire case, with external psu. it uses a ps2 plug wired funny. (they even have wiring diagram for it!)
got it for NZ$ 70 inc shipping.
on trademe (like ebay) this goes for about 80-100. welll-thats what they want for it neways.
just killed an old kboard to get ps2 plug. hook that up to a homebrew 5/12v psu and volia.
Ext hdd thats cheap. and has a warrenty.
yet to try wif cd/dvd drive. nt using one in car yet.
I think the error message is the result of extending your USB cable for too long. I have my mp3 plug into around 12' extend usb cable it shows up same symtom, but when i plug it direct to the desktop, it works fine. Some how my usb mouse and gps unit work on this extend cable. Its kind of weird
Looks like you need drivers. I have a couple usb2.0 cases, one I have put my old hard drive and one a cd-writer. The usb-ide chip in the second I had to find drivers for xp (linux recognized it fine). Both were no name $20 ones.
I dont know if you have internet access, either wireless or running a long cable, but you can let winxp search for it automatically online, its worked well for me when I cant find a driver. I have even done it when I had the cd and still got an error. I say try that, it may find what it needs, always worked for me.
I recently bought a USB to IDE adapter for my car computer. The computer is having trouble recognizing the device. I had it plugged into the computer yesterday and it was working fine, but I had to unplug it today and when I plugged it back in the computer would not recognize it. When I look at the USB hub's indicator lights (where the drive is plugged in) the port light with the DVD lights up for a few seconds then it turns off and acts as if there is nothing plugged into it. All my other USB devices seem to be working fine. I'm using XP so it should recognize the drive automatically. Anyone else have trouble connecting USB devices and know how I can get it to recognize?
Thanks
