Ya, I noticed that too, but I don't think you have to be super precise on where you point it. Looks like the reciever has a pretty wide angle judging by the picture.
Besides, how wrong can you go for $17 with a $10 freebie?
I have that keyboard, and the IR limitation isn't a factor for my use of it. I use it from 20 feet away and it never misses a beat. The pointer takes a little time to get used to, but it is useful. It seems to be pretty well built, and the side to side and up and down position the keyboard can be from the sensor is pretty good. There does need to be line of site though.
Don't get because of the customer appreciation gift, it is pretty cheesy (didn't stop me from getting it but...).
As a bonus the keyboard also works with an AOL/Gateway device that I recently added a header to and a laptop drive to run Windows on.
