    Targus Multimedia Presenters

Anyone have any experience with these devices from Targus?

This one has a trackball built in and I am thinking could be the ticket.

This one has a D-Pad but is pretty sleek looking.

I am about to gut my In-Dash unit and place the monitor in the area Nissan had intended for their navigation system in the Titan. Should turn out really nice but since I am gutting it I am also tempted to remove the touchscreen portion just so it is a little brighter and clearer. This of course opens up the can of worms of how to control the computer without a touchscreen.

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

I had to run out for a while at work and I could not just pass CompUSA so being a man of more money than brains I picked up the first one listed with the trackball.

I have not tried it in the vehicle yet but on this machine this thing is awesome and may be just what the doctor ordered.

The trackball feels a little on the cheap side but it could be because it is new and tight but the range is phenominal. I can control it from 10' away, the manual says it is good for up to 66'. There is a mode button on it that turns the left & right mouse buttons into volume up/down, an esc. key, alt-tab key and two macro buttons used to launch explorer & mail. I'm sure those can be made to launch something else, this I will have to tinker with.

It takes two (2) AAA batteries and even has an on/off switch so you can preserve them. No drivers are required, just plug the USB receiver in & go. Just working with it for a couple of minutes it is already comfortable. I can't wait to give it an honest run in the truck.

    I'll write again.......

Well, I tried this thing on the way home and I think I have a winner. I am very pleased with the accuracy and there are enough functions on the mouse to move around the system much faster than the touchscreen. The touchscreen is obviously still faster for certain tasks but when trying to manipulate an onscreen keyboard, this thing wins hands down.

I've literally unplugged my touchscreen control to force me to use this thing for the next couple of days before I make the change to my vehicle to make sure this is definitely what I want.

The trackball still has a cheap feeling to it due to the ball bearings used to float the ball, I'm not happy with that but I guess I'll have to see if I can get use to it.

I've lost signal with it a few times but I do not believe it is a range issue as it is happening when I go to pick the mouse up after it being idle a while. Almost like it goes into a sleep mode and does not know how to recover. Could be a faulty unit.

Undetermined yet. The reason is that I mentioned in the other post that this unit could be faulty and it definitely is. I am going to take it back today and get another one. If my findings are similar then the search will continue.

I'm hoping this is just a glitch unit though as I think this thing is superior to touchscreens.

    Forget about about it!

I went to CompUSA and exchanged it. When I got the new one out of the container I immediately noticed that the trackball was very smooth and felt 100 times better than the previous one. I would bet that the previous one took a hit somewhere. Thinking that was the cause for it not operating properly I quickly connected it to only have the same exact problems as the other unit.

I returned that but did find the Keyspan Remote. I took that out to the car and tried it and I am very impressed. No communication issues, crisp response, light and only requires a watch type battery.

The only downside of the Keyspan is that it is not a trackball, it is a D-pad. The D-pad is pressure sensitive so it can be useful I just have to see if I can get use to it that way. If I can get use to it, I'd have no problem getting rid of the touchscreen.

in my experience the trackball is unusable in the car... just driving down the road causes just enough motion for the cursor to be moving, so in times when watching a movie player that has controls that disappear after so many seconds of mouse inactivity, you will just see the controls disappear, then reappear, etc... rather annoying...

not to mention that the touchscreen is approx the same price as the device you have here...
