Why not just a standard serial to USB convertor.

I've just got a Ondigital remote, but I don't have a serial port on my laptop. I've seen people post about using a Sega controller connection on the reciever to make it a USB connection. Can anyone tell me if this was successful? Seems like soem people have sold their Ondgital remotes?
Does anyone have a suggestion about converting the serial connector so I can use it with the parellel port on the laptop?
Thanks!
Why not just a standard serial to USB convertor.

I read a post that said the serial to USB converter won't not help.
MatrixPC mentioned in this thread that a serial USB converter won't work with ONDigital, is this correct?

In my term, "real" serial/com port is one that is on the mobo aka RS-232 or one of those IO add on card.
USB <-> Serial adapter is not. Those are virtual/emulate COM port. The serial receiver doesn't work with this type of COM ports.
Serial usb convertor should work fine.
