Okay, an idea popped in my head.
Has anyone tried hacking up a USB mouse with a scrolling wheel?
I'll do that as soon as I receive my tablet.
The scrolling wheel is perfect, it's small and it already has a controller.
Only thing you need to do is play with Girder for like 2 minutes.
PS: one could buy a knob from Mouser for $5 and hook it up to the mouse, so you got a ready-made controller. Ohh, I just got an evil plan!

Check out the i-drive thread in input devices. There is a link to doing it with an old mouse in there (actually 2 links, one by me).

Damn, I had the perfect encoder from my factory HU, but I installed (along with the encoder) in my sister's KIA since I was no longer using itDamn, now I need to buy another one or use the one that comes with the mouse.

check out http://www.mouser.com/ for alps rotary encoders. i just picked up an 8 way joystick with rotary encoder. pretty neat!
