usb IRDA dongle - emulate serial?
well ive put some thought into it but have gotten jack **** outta it... basicly i got a usb IR Dongle for like 2 bucks and i want to know i can set it so it emulates a serial port insted of usb port... so that way i can use programs to set hot keys and stuff with a spair remote and program it for the car... i know the dongle works because i have transfed data between my cellphone and ppc... if someone can help me out i would appriciate it :-D thanks!
I actually researched this a long time ago. I have the same thing you do ... a usb IrDA dongle.
From what I found, there is no way to capture the IR codes ... the only thing it was designed to do is file transfers/connections between computers.

oh man that seriously sucks then! esp cuz i dont got a serial port in the carpc... another question is if i get a serial ir dongle and i pick up a usb to serial converter will it still work with a remote and girder and stuff
A usb ir dongle is different than a usb serial converter....
USB-Serial is a cable that plugs in to the USB port and gives you a serial plug on the other side.... USB ir dongle will still need to plug into the USB board and will never integrate with the usb-serial cable...
Why dont you just get a better ir dongle that can do Remote Control? I'm sure this exists... check the girder site they might have a solution or products that work for your case
