Infrared USB eye choices

I bought a IMON remote and it seems to be a good deal especially for $25. The issue I have though is the damn eye is about the size of a racket ball. I want something more stealth for my install (PC should be here today

) Are there other choices for a USB IR receiver? As a last resort I may try and hack the "eyeball" up and just use the "iris" portion on the dash and place all the other internals behind the dash.

Would something like this work? Actually a eye like this would be preferred

Any suggestion on if something like the above would work or even something smaller, homemade?

Any IRDA devices will not work with consumer IR remotes (found this out the hard way). I bought something similar to the first link and discovered it wouldn't work. I'm not sure about the second one, though. I was running into the same problem you're having of finding a nice stealthy IR receiver, but it seems that no such product exists. I have found hundreds and hundreds of articles on how to construct your own serial IR receiver, but not one place that offers to sell them.

I use an IR keyboard with track ball. I took the reciver apart and inside was a small board with a reciver and a few lights, all about the size of a credit card. I suggest taking it apart and see if you can hide it below the dash.

maybe you could disguise the receiver...like make a diarama of two people playing racket ball on your dash and have the receiver bounce between them... sorry, that was unproductive. but yea...i think Nomad has a good idea. if you take stuff apart you find they usually pack a lot of plastic crap on.

Yeah, after waking up a bit and reading it again, I agree...take it apart...it is probably small enough to fit somewhere inconspicuously, like in an a/c vent.

Old school! Ill be reusing my IrMan in my next setup though.. Since it came out, theyve added functions to integrate it with power dvd, windvd, creative labs, etc etc...

Take it apart - hit it with the soldering iron and extend the ir reciever to where you want, using some small wire - like 3 of the internal strands of cat 5.
