    VNC confusion

I'm looking into using my PPC as a remote control for my carputer. VNC seemed to be the obvious choice but I'm a little confused as to what it does. If I'm controlling my carputer through my PPC using VNC, will the audio/video files open up and play using the PPC's hardware or is it that I can just view+control what's happening on the carputer? I'm asking b/c if it opens up the files and plays them through the PPC's hardware then I'm gonna end up with ****ty playback and audio quality. However, if it actually acts simply as a remote control then that means the audio will be outputted through the carputers soundcard and I can listen to music through my car's speakers (which will be hooked up to the carputer's soundcard). It will also run a LOT better since the carputer will have much better RAM/CPU/etc. than my little PDA.

Programs I'm looking at right now are pebbles, netremote, etc.

I'm pretty sure that VNC leaves playback of audio on the server. Video will be displayed locally and remotely, though, but it will look like crap over VNC. You'll probably get about 1 FPS. It should playback normally on your carputer screen, though.

I know with Remote Desktop you have the option to leave audio on the server or play it back locally. I'm not sure about those other programs.

Is there some other way that will display video at a better quality? I don't want to spend money (right now at least) on a $300 screen when I can just use my ipaq instead. Plus I have no exp /w fabrication so cutting up my dash isn't a very attractive option.

    What are 'terminal services'?
And I'm still looking for a good PPC VNC client. Other than VNC, is there any other app that will allow me to view/control the desktop of another computer on my PPC?

I think VNC is about it. And it's video processing and main processing speeds aren't enough to really handle too much.. You'd be better off buying a screen unless you can handle the delay, small screen, and lack of useful video playback.

I know XBOX media center has a web based interface. Is there a project that has sometihng similar for.. say... girder?

A simple, small form website would look great on a PDA, and you would just need to open it over wireless.

VNC is your best bet. it's been out there for years. you can choose to leave the audio on these server machine. if you want video playback you can always get a cheap composite screen for awhile.

I really would like video and from what I've heard VNC isnt' exactly the best for that, gets about 1fps which sucks. I've been lookin at remote desktop and netremote, but I'm getting pretty discouraged with the whole thing. If I can't find a way to stream/control both video AND audio through the PDA, then I might just shell out the cash for a lilli or xenarc.
One option I've considered is using PHP to write a script that allows me to open/control media players on the carputer through my PDA - should be relatively simple, but since I don't know PHP and that front end would probably look really ugly, I dunno if I want to do that.

Terminal Services is the Windows XP (Pro) Remote Desktop Client/Server, which essentially a built-in PC Anywhere type program. I don't know if there is a Remote Desktop client for your PDA, but if there is, then it's a much better choice than VNC.

After I manage to get my carputer built, that will be my primary interface (assuming my wifi network extends out to my car) to messing with the software.
