Same problem over and over, reliability of XP as a control app.

Still i will go with it, I have just wrote a vb app that sits on screen till a code is entered.

ID mouse software can watch for this app and if it sees the app running,it pops up a 'press finger to pad message'

You press finger to pad and it sends keystrokes to the app to enter the code and the app sends its relay command and quits.

If the pad wont work you can click on the buttons with the mouse to enter your password etc (very touchscreen friendly)

Been a good exercise in learning VB but not much use in car if the machine crashes etc

yeah, good point. If the computer doesnt boot, there would be no software to disable to fuel supply.

Exactly.. so if the computer fails to boot, fuel cut off (likely causing them to crash, as they've been driving frantically for a minute trying to get AWAY from the scene of the crime), if they're smart enough and saw the "enter password" creen, then saw the comp and car shut down, they'll rip out the computer and start up again and drive off. Kind of a silly idea.

I would think that for any security system to work, the PC need to be a key (pun intended) part of the running process ie if you removed it the car wouldn't function. As previously implyed, if by simply removing the pc and twisting a couple of wires together you could bypass it, the system would be practically useless.
However, who here has enough faith in their O/S and software to work 100% of the time? Being stuck on the driveway with a blue screen would be very frustrating, but (for example) a fuel system lock out on the motorway would be even less funny. In my opinion the technology most us are using just isn't reliable enough.
