I would be more likely to build one with a trackpad if I had a spare stick and a trackpad sitting around. - but since i dont. Im going with what I prefer, and thats trackballs!
lol
I suppose I jumped the gun a little on that post. what I should have posted first was the actual photos of the controller itself.
they can of course all be found here

now, everyone by now has seen the front of this joystick,
but how many of you have had one part?
this is what it looks like on the "IN-side" - (this is of course, my favorite side...)
you can see this unit is comprised of not one, but actually three seperate circuit boards. the first one really only has the two joysticks on there, (and I will be saving that for later) and the second is the plastation buttons and brains. these boards are completely seperate from the keyboard board, so we just take those right out of there.
this pic shows the cypress cy7c63413 keyboard encoder proccessor, and it shows that barely half of the pins on it are even wired up.
what it Also shows is that the pins are so friggin small, I could just about puke.
heres a better view of what I mean
now THAT is going to be a nightmare to solder into.. *grumble*
anyway, this keyboard controler chip also has a built in mouse controller, so hooking up a ps2 version of the trackball would be a snap, and I could get away with not using a hub. but as I have said before, I like the hub concept, and I could allways use the mouse controller to operate that jog wheel right?
anyway, thats all for now. more on this project as parts come in and progress gets made.

yeah i'd got with your last concept. no changes. looks easiest to make and easiest to use.
you can get one for...$4 on ebay. lol (trackpad)
Neat project. Using the extra pins for the trackball would be really cool.
As for smaller track balls, the smallest I've seen is a 'Mouse Pen' that I found several years ago at a Big Lots store, which has a ~1/4" ball, and the controller section in the 'pen'. You could either use like a pen on a mouse pad, or flip it over and use it as a trackball.
have you checked the mouse control built in the chip is active ?
I have a ps2 to usb keyboard and a ps2 keyboard and mouse to usb adapter, both use the same chip, but even adding the wiring to the other one to bring it up to mouse and keyboard wont work as it wont see amouse, seems its in the firmware etc and activated at production time.
cy7c63723 on both.

man, I saw one of those a LONG time ago, but have never seen one since. maybe I should look for one...Originally Posted by tom61
thanks for the tip Lez. I have not even checked it yet. im just remaining hopeful. heh. if the mouse controller is not active, it wqont be much of a big deal because I will just use a usb hub,. the real digger will be if the other "keys" are not active. if they programmed it with none of the other pin s active, it will be a real bummer. there is no way I could solder a NEW one on. but hey, maybe these things are reprogrammable? I havent had time to check out the programming software for these things..Originally Posted by lez
any updates?
I've just changed cars and the old car pc was a big item in the old car, I want it smaller in this car so the full size keyboard is out!
I got a ps2 glidepoint, I think its alps not sure, but it wont work on usb and is ps2 only.
