heres a pic of an extra volume control i had laying around...
as you can see there are 4 wires on each side it doesnt matter which side goes to the speakers or the amp..now this just came to me but you would only be able to use one amp![]()
ok let my first say that i did do a qucik search and did not find anything but if im double posting im sorry and second im wasnt sure if this should go in this section so im sorry again if it is in the wrong section...
ok now onto the idea...
in my house i have an amplifer powering speakers throughout my house and outside and to control the volume on the speakers i use this(its not the exact one but similar)...it also JOGS

now i know its big and bulky (or maybe theres a smaller one somewhere) but maybe someone can find a way to shave off some weight and make it smaller this would probably be connected after the amplifer (like in my home) and from there you would have to somehow connect the 2 pairs of wires to your speakers...maybe theres a splitter or something?? there is also a version of the volume controler that uses RCA connectors

I have been thinking of the same idea, but with a four sided pot from radioshack. I guessing thats what you have found. It should work, splice one of your speaker wires and connect two of the wires from your control knob and see if you are able the control the volume of the speaker.
Why not use an alps encoder to control the volume via software that way you also have an extra input device.
kalt,
i want like an actual volume knob so when i need to turn it down (or up) real quick than im able to the software then kinda ****es me off
I had a Phoenix Gold amp a few years back that had a remote volume/level control (zx600ti). It was primarily used for the sub but you can get one and use it the way you want. The volume control was a variable resistor (knob) on the end of a telephone cable that you could mount anywhere. I think it was only for low pass level control but I'm sure you could set it up to do full level control.
I wouldn't use the home control you have shown above because it gets pretty hot and you have to send a amplified signal through it. There are also plenty of level controls that you can wire in with the RCA cables on their way to the amp.
Or better yet, you could get an aftermarket equalizer with a volume control and use that to fine tune things and control the volume at the same time.
