extending detachable face from deck

First off, WOW! What an amazing site! This is my first time here and I just spent about 3 hours reading and printing threads.

Now, I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum here so let me apologize in advance for possibly screwing up my first post. Let me also apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed previously. I did some searches but didn't find anything.

What I'm interested in doing is taking a standard deck (Alpine 9857) and permanantly detaching the face from the deck and manufacturing some sort of cable to extend the distance between the two.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why print them?
They're not going anywhere.... And you can't search for keywords in the printed copies...

Cat5 cable is the preferred method of extending a faceplate.

solder a cat5 cable between the headunit and faceplate. takes a while, but works good.

do guys have some model numbers of headunits that work?
seems like the newers ones dont work.

I don't believe there is a current list wazzaap123, but it's a damn good idea.

I'll run over to the Car Audio section and see if I can start a thread asking for a list.

I'll come back over here and link to it when I'm done.

I think the difficult part would be soldering the Cat5 to the multiple connections between the headunit and faceplate. While I am not talented at soldering, I do have considerable experience doing it, and my experience tells me to think twice before attempting something like that...

A potiential downside is that if the soldering job does not go well, you may have a very difficult time removing the solder from the small, delicate contacts in such a way that alllows the faceplate to correctly seat and mate again...I would think it would be very easy to damage a contact while soldering or removing solder, especially given the small size of most contacts and the proximity to highly meltable faceplate plastic and heat sensitive display components.
