As far as a decent PCI card that'll actually support FULL motion video (most cards are rated in either FRAMES per second or FIELDS per second, by the way), you'll probably need to spend about $400. There are plenty of 'pre built' video servers that support four full motion inputs for a little more than that as standalone units.

Basically most '4 port capture' cards only have ONE chip, usually a bt848 or bt878. That ONE chip is really only capable of ONE input at 30fps. Otherwise what the card is doing is using the four standard input pins and trying to poll each pin within that 30fps, meaning you only get 7.5 frames per second on each input, if that.

To get four cameras all capturing full motion video, you need a card with at least four chips, hence the $400 price tag. Plus, actually recording all of those cameras is gonna take a boatload of processor time, so you'll need a fairly beefy system for it (well, midrange anyway)

You'd be better off getting a standalone box for your house, is what I think i'm trying to say.

not only a beefy sytem, but you'l have to go outside & run your car for 15 min each hour to not kill the battery... when recording like this, power consumtion will be up there...

I think the best way to REALLY do this is to base it on a camcorder device,

you can also use a microwave sensor set on max, so any movement within a few feet of the vehicle triggers recording...

on a pc while parked for hours & hours will need a whole bank of aux batteries, & even if you went to that extent, chances are your parked to driving ratio isn't high enough to maintain a charge on the aux bank.....

camcorder based...., paired with a 4 ch multiplexer...

The guy cut himself breaking in the house, blood all over, they didn't do jack again. Now I understand how upsetting it is to have car audio equipment stolen, I've had that done many a time before, but this how you I make a living using these tools. Think the flippin' cops could do something besides sit on their fat asses and "fill out a report".

Anyway, I also park very close to my house so I'm looking into getting a couple of wireless cameras and running the video receiver on my home computer. That way I can recorded it, possibly set up some kind of alarm, maybe motion, and also record who breaks in. That way the flippin' cops can have a video with which they'll probably not do jack with.
After they tried to get my car, the cops came and took my statement, had me fill out a report, talked to me about it, and then sent forensics to print and photograph my car. They came out at midnight on a holiday, I thought that was impressive. Then they talked with my landlord and got copies of the videos from the underground parking, and then they took a walk down the street and talked to people out for a walk hoping maybe they were out for a walk that night as well and seen the guys. And then met with me at work on my time schedule to do a photo lineup so I could ID the guy, they were VERY accomodating, so I have to defend the law in that sense. The case was handed off to a detective and he found the guy in 30 days, gave me a callback just to let me know.

I am so moving to O' Canada! When I called the police, they said they'd call in 3 days, which they did, almost to the hour. I told them that someone recovered the briefcase that had also been stolen. I asked, "Do you want to come get prints?" Of course not. Since it was found in someone's yard all they could say was that they saw it and touched it. I told them that some of the tools had been repaired and I had the receipt at my other house it might have some of the serial numbers on it. The bozo said to call and give the case number and add the numbers. So I called them a couple of days later, again with the "we'll call you in three days" routine, which they did. When I told this new bozo that I wanted to give them the serial number (I only had one, six digits) He told me that he didn't have the time to be writing them down, that he would send me a form and I could fill it out myself and mail it back. WHich gave me great hopes of seeing my tools again.

In the house, with the blood, they actually came out, didn't do anything but make a list of the tools that had been stolen. They saw the blood but didn't bother doing anything about it. Now I understand that the cost of running a DNA test might be too much for stolen tools but how much could it possibly cost to take a sample and save it in case they found some *** with all my tools in their truck?!? Or even take a sample and throw it away when you get to the station, at least I'd feel like you give a rats ***.

OH, yeah! drive without your flippin' seatbelt and they are all over you like stink on ****!
    Stupid *** Cops!
