It doesn't hurt at all to have them powered while the car is on. (Accessory power, not direct battery)
I just tired mine into my the same wires running to my rear 12-volt accessory socket.
in case of bears, you should allways remain inside your vehicle !
seriously.. It's a nice view, with the only problem that you can't see distances very well..
