Basic Winamp Remotes Available--Been away for a while

u mentioned least expensive, here goes :

2) use an old remote
3) u'll need winlirc & girder 3.3 c/w winamp plugin

hohenyi, that is the option I went with. I just didn't need the girder program. Winlirc w/ Winamp plugin was enough. Works great. I did have to put Winlirc in the startup menu so that it would load automatically. Without that, Winamp gives an error when it starts up.

I had a few remotes. The Toshiba remote works well. The JVC remotes responded, but couldn't keep a good signal...according to winlirc.

One question, will Girder allow me to choose specific track numbers?

1) U just need to learn a remote with winlirc, safe it to a .cfg file it does not matter if the analyze failed, girder still can received the code when u press a button on the remote.
2) Track number = It does not have this (girder 3.3) will u be happy with the following winamp (ver 5.2) command:-
a) Jump to file (if u got a playlist loaded a dialog box will pop up and u can use the up & down arrow to scroll it)
b) Start of list
c) End of List
d) 10 track back
e) 10 track foward

if your cellphone has bluetooth, and you already have a bt dongle in the car there are a few apps that control winamp via bt. Cheapest route if you already have the gear.

using your cell phone to control your computer could be a lot more difficult and cumbersome than using a remote like what's listed in the beginning of this thread.

true, but if there's a "cheap" way to interface my cell phone to my car pc it would be good for many other things other than winamp [not tryin to jack this thread, as i know this has been said b4 at mp3car] i like the idea of using bluetooth ... any one know the software to use? [girder?]

Try Control Freak (ver 2.2) for s60 symbian BT phone it does winamp, mouse, desktop display, VLC and etc search for it here www.ipmart-forum.com if u already have the phone & maybe a BT dongle then its free good luck.

Posted by the OP, this remote and reciever will work with standard remotes. I use tv remotes and so on with my home theater pc and its great. Works with a USB to Serial converter too! Ebay it for under $10, its a Packard Bell remote.

if you have a SONY phone you can use FMA (free) to control winamp and pretty much anything on your pc and doesn't take weeks to configure. If you have a newer sony phone, most of them come with remote control software on the phone that works out of the box.

There are similar apps for nokia phones and others. I only buy sony phones so i can only really tell you first hand about aps that work with it.

Other apps that ive tried and work good are.

Sailing Clicker- originally a mac app, they ported it to windows and has support for win mobile 5 phones, sony, nokia and others. Very easy to setup and get working. Prob has the largest list of supported devices. And also works over wifi if you device has it (pda's) Not free

bluetooth remote control - (not free)
i havnt tried this one, but there site claims it works with all nokia series 40 & 60 phones, sony, siemens, moto phones released after the Razer v3i.
Seems they take a different approach and use java on the phone through BT to connect to the pc from the phone, most others the pc initiates the connection.

There are plenty more of these apps, just have to search for them, ive seen a few on sourceforge so open source is good.

I wouldn't be put off by using bluetooth to control your pc. There are many apps for this that are very, easy to setup and get running and a few that are a huge pain in the butt and difficult to get working.
