they make a friggin AWSOME smaller one too, with 8 illuminated buttons around the edge.... PERFECT.... except the price of $200... check this out...

I think I can deal with the larger one... I don't think this will work directly with girder though... it seems pretty involved.. it uses optical sensors... the first signs that this can be used & I'm ordering one

I got mine today! been using google earth with it. it's cool, and after a while it becomes very natuaral

there's not any tactical feedback of individual motions, other than reaching the limits. so it's like a cap on a stick that can move in loads of directions, with increaseing resistance towards the edges. it has two buttons on teh side and it's very very heavy... tho not heavy enough to stay down when zooming out agresively. but then, I do have big hands!

I think so. Having just for google earth in the car's great alone, paired with a good connection. I'm going to mess around with the control panel and see what's possible.

I've messed around wiht a picture viewer it comes with also, which means it easier to view images since you can zoom and pan much quicker than you would with a mouse/touchscreen.

I've heard the SDK can be downloaded and I'm guessing it's just like a gamepad to add. For native support, something like:

push knob down to go forward a mode (gps/music/...) and pull up to go back, then using the up down left right panning to go through the different options. twisting to tweak variables like volume, or cycling through tracks, and using the two buttons to add/remove form the playlist. etc

it would be nice to has an OSD ghost image of the controller, showing a current contextual mapping of functions. That would open up loads of ability.

in my mind, it has lots of potential. I'll report more when I find out more
