this may be a interesting option for a car remote

kind of like the gyration mouse but a hell of a lot cheaper.

I planned on upgrading my xbox1 wireless controler i have in the car to a xbox360 wireless pc controler (when it came out) but this may be a much better option as its shaped more like a remote than a controller. Not sure if i want to wave my arms around in the car though

    just an update,

surprised no one else has tried this yet.

Well i got myself a wii and using the remote on the pc is nice. This is definitely going to be the new fulltime remote i use in the car.

Just curious if anyone else is doing/planning on doing the same?

I don't think this would work in a moving car. The gyroscope has no way knowing which movement is from the car and what is from the user so the arrow might go where you don't want it when you are turning or accelerating. I don't have any experience with this so I could be wrong but its a cool idea.

i dont think that will be a problem, i doubt the remote will know im driving 80mph. There are people using the gyration mouse in there cars also, and it works pretty much the same as the nintendo remote. Now im no physics major but i also think the laws of gravity play a major role here too, other wise the remote would never work as the earth is spinning too.

I dont plan on using the motion aspects of the remote anyway. The way i have it setup now, the arrow keys control the mouse, the trigger is a left click and the A button is Enter. Im just playing with it now and haven't decided on a final key map yet, but its very comfortable to use and feels good in your hand, and im pretty impressed with the accuracy of the mouse control.

One area the motion would be really cool in the car is to control google earth, there is a script thats setup to control it from the wiimote and its pretty cool and makes navigating the map a breeze.

I started a forum about it a bit ago:

    Wiimote

I'm convinced it's not the best solution for what I wanted to do, which was point at the screen. If your not planning to us the motions at all then your fine...

Can you feel the Earth spin? Can you feel the force of your car turning? That's about the same as the Wiimote; likely sensitive enough to get confused with car motion.

yeah turning may be an issue, but shouldnt be much of a problem if the mouse moved a little while turning except for on screens with autohide menus like video and DVD.
Pointing isnt what i want to do though, you need the sensor bar to point correctly like it does on the wii as it uses the IR to triangulate the remots L/R position. To point i would just use the gyration mouse thats better designed for the PC but a bit more expensive.

    Ill check your thread out.

i actually did it last week, my friend got a wii for xmas, and let me borrow his 'mote for a day

it is impossible to use as a regulart mouse, it shakes too much

    gestures... not enough room...

only thing i can get working is a flick to the right to change the song, left to go back, down to play/pause, and up for a menu

however, it isnt very.. effective. because there isnt IR transmitters in the car to stablize, the accelrometers jump around causing undesired results.

also, when you put it down, or pick it up, or turn with it... it does something
although that cna be fixed with just having to press a button on it while you do a gesture

overall, its just awkward to use because there isnt enoughspace, go get your tv remotr right now, sit in your chair upright, and hold the remote close to yer chest, or directly to your side, and try doing the gestures or using buttons (or harder, pretend using it like a mouse)

No need to even hold the remote in your hands.

Interesting. But I prefer holding the remote to putting tape on my fingers :-)

Can performance be improved by a couple of really bright IR LED's next to LCD panel? ... hm

...This is fine and all, but could the guy who wrote the program for the Wii write one for the PS3 bluetooth remote? More functional than the Wiimote currently...
