    car stereo faceplate

just a thought... has anyone tried hacking apart a car stereo faceplate for mp3 player control? After all it has plenty of buttons and a handy lcd screen!

I've seen a few cheap ones on ebay, was thinking of perhaps taking one to bits and hard wiring the buttons to a com port. Ive just got my seperate lcd hooked up to the printer port so it might be possible to remove the face's screen and squeezing my one into the empty space.

I'm not too impressed with touch screens either. I want pushbuttons and nobs with intuitive functionality at my fingertips.

With BMW the buttons generate messages on a car communication bus. IBus or later MOST. I think this is the way most cars are designed today.

If that is the case in your car too, you don't have to tap onto the buttons themselves, only the bus. This is what I have experience in.

What kind of unit did you find on eBay? Obviously this does not apply to aftermarket products.

You'll need an interface board to process the signals and send it to a computer.
