synaptics touchpad to usb

i have managed to find some information on this forum about modifying synaptics touchpads.

Synaptics Touchpad TM41PUK324

and

Laptop Touchpad to PS2

both threads refer to the touchpad being intergrated with the ps/2 slot,
however, i was wondering is there a way to wire the pad up to a usb slot??? or even a serial port??

any help would be great

i cant just buy one, its for a project im doing.

could i interface the ps2 to a serial connection just by hooking up the correct pins? or would there be a problem with protocols again or the serial not understanding the ps2 input?

without reading those links, the first thing that comes to mind is wire it to PS2 then use a ps2 to usb adapter ... that might get things in the right direction
