I haven't looked very closely at the iPad but on the surface it seems the dock connector can be used to provide power and usb ports (since they have an adapter to connect a printer). As long as the CPU is up to the task, and you can work within the disk space constraints, once it is jailbroken I think it's all you need. The GPS and 3g can be provided over wifi by a jailbroken iPhone. You hard mount the iPad and you just need your phone with you when you are in the car. We can write software on both sides to meet our needs.

As Bugbyte says the key is we have an affordable touch screen/computer combo now - that's what was missing before.

If USB ports can be added/accessed via the dock port, then you can add exta disk space, GPS etc directly.

The iPad will do 'file sharing'. And then there's the adaptor for USB.

I personally don't understand the need for big storage in this unless one mounts it in their dash. So easy to grab and sync on a computer. I guess I don't understand the need for that. When one is driving.

I would want to mount it in the dash. I'm actually thinking about taking out my current dash and building a complete custom one, this was just one of the projects I want to incorporate into it. Storage space would be neccessary because I would want a large collection of movies and tv shows. I spend two summers in a tent in the middle of nowhere as a climbing guide so this would be my sanity keeper.

As for sharing 3g over wifi, this isn't possible (in my previous post I think I wrote ad hoc, which is incorrect). We can only do that via USB and bt. If this iPad will allow us to share the connection through USB that's great, if it's bt, this could be great as well. I'm thinking that kind of internet sharing won't ever be allowed by apple so we would have to jailbreak it.

    The iPhone already does filesharing.

I'm also excited about this new plug. Since the ipad has the same dock conector as the iPhone, maybe we will soon be able to add USB ports to the iPhone!

Are you sure about this? I run PDAnet on my iPhone and it creates a hotspot that you can connect to wirelessly and access the net. Is there any reason an iPad wouldn't do the same?

I'm looking to completely replace my fold out screen with the iPad, probably hacking my dash to allow it to dock as well. A different option is to replace my actual car speedo and instruments with it but that might be a little too far.

In any case, I'll probably get at least the WiFi one, then sell it an upgrade when they get the hardware right! Makes no financial sense but that's why it's called a hobby.

Very interested in watching this develop!

What i want to see is jailbroken or not, an integrated ipad/iphone where the ipad is the visual screen for the iphone. All features, GPS, Music, Video, phone, applications are run from the iphone, all the ipad does is serve as the touch screen.

You walk into the car, turn the car on, ipad comes on, pairs with the iphone, and you see the iphone UI on the ipad.

An other edition would be a good cradle for your iPhone that has a QUICK and simple dock for your car. No fiddling with wires and snaps, it just connects by placing the iphone on/in it. It will need to charge, connect to the stereo, have a mic for hands free and possibly serve as the interface to connect to the iPad.

There would be a huge benefit in so many ways between my installed carputer now and the new iphone carputer. The negatives would be greatly diminished if the iphone carputer were to ever come to life. If this actually happens, this could change carputers as we know them. Period.

    Im so excited now!

    Keyboard control of iphone

Not sure if this is helpful and/or new but this iType keyboard allows control (albeit not touchscreen control) of an iphone.

Very interesting. Obviously, you can now use a BT wireless keyboard with an iPhone, along with a BT mouse if jailbroken but this doesn't require a jailbreak.

I'm not advertising the keyboard for fat fingers or that its actually a good product, just trying to contribute to finding a way to get touchscreen control via an external monitor.

Does the iPad make this thread a moot point? In other words instead of buying a liliput external monitor and finding a way to control your docked iPhone - just mounting a iPad in the dash. Or even docking the iPad in the dash.
