Does the iPad make this thread a moot point? In other words instead of buying a liliput external monitor and finding a way to control your docked iPhone - just mounting a iPad in the dash. Or even docking the iPad in the dash.
That's what I'm going to do.

See post 39. I think it does.

    I'm not so sure...
I've been an early adopter of mobile tech, since Nokia Communicators, really.. remember them?
I had one mounted on my dash, open, so I could use it as I drove..
My interest in these threads is to expand my iPhone useage into my car, but safely as possible.
I want everything in one place. I've got really used to having everything I need in one place. I don't read email on my PC anymore, I want it with me, so I use my iPhone, I store notes on it, I keep links on it, I've got useful apps on it.
If I use multiple devices, I lose info as its invariably on a device I've not got with me.
So what I want is to be be able to dock my iPhone into something that makes it safely useable in my car. Hence my interest here.
I could have an iPad, or any other UPMC type devices on my dash, but that takes me into another device. I quite fancied the Viliv X70 at one point but it spreads me across multiple devices again...
My phone is the form factor I like, so just want to expand the interface, not swap devices, so for me its very much not moot!

Yes....I agree with above post. I also have multiple vehicles, and it would not be feasible to fab an ipad dock into each of them. With an iphone dock controlled by a touchscreen though, it seems to be my solution. As said above, the ipad is another device to interface with when we already have a device, we just need hardware. Granted, ill probably buy the ipad if there is no solution the current state of problems (screen, phone control), but would like to see this idea come to life.

Hi bug, I've been following along and I'm kind of disapointed to see you're just dropping your whole project just to swap over to the ipad, which would basically be putting abother pc in your car rather than killing it. If anything else I would at least like to know if you're able to get the bluetooth touch screen working, if there's a bluetooth stack that is.

I don't see a lot of difference between an iPhone and an iPad. They're both computers.

Frankly, my change in position has been from a single device - whether phone or PC to a multiple device installation with internet connectivity figuring prominently.

I understand PhilN's post about having everything on one device, but I just don't agree that this is the future. I think it is more about accessing your data and information from ANY device. If you want to just use a smartphone, that's fine but if you wanted to, you could access it from a PC or any type of device.

Turns out that the touchscreen is NOT bluetooth. So, until/unless some kind of controller can be found that uses BT, there's no option even for a driver.

Jailbreaking your iPhone gives you BT keyboard and mouse if you install the alt BT stack, which I have. That's great, but it still doesn't give you TS control over the iPhone.

I use all my key data locally, though, I have email via POP/SMTP not webmail, I have documents stored on my device, I have notes I can access on my device.
Coverage can be spotty so having everything on a server and accessing a central repository from any device would work, but not necessarily when I need it the most, inside a building say, or out on site far from cell towers.
I use the cloud for new data, my critical stuff is stored locally.
My iPhone is the current expression of that, with added bonuses, I want to be able to see route information and car data, which could be done with a vehicle dedicated installation, but I also want to be able to answer the occasional SMS, email, document which is only held on 1 device.
I cant do this currently and is what I am working towards, constructing an in-car phone interface useable whilst driving. Currently state-of-the-art is the MP3car store kit, using TVout on the phone, down low by the gearstick, making it a touchpad for the screen, fixed on the dash.
If I use the admittedly great alternative BT stack I lose handsfree kit connectivity. which is a legal requirement over here in the UK and part of the core functionality I require.
I appreciate everyones input, especially Bugbyte for starting the ball rolling.. As it is our end requirements have diversified but that's the way projects go. I really feel I'm standing on the shoulders of giants here.
Setting up my in-car diagnostics as webpages on an in-car server is a cool idea on its own and will facilitate access even using the system I'm building, I use an Italian Nanocom unit to access my Landrover Disco 2s systems which is incompatible with an iPhone anyway so am looking to emulate it too!

Glad I found this thread. The below link makes it sound like the touch works. Not sure why that kit comes with a touchscreen f it doesn't work.

It comes with a touchscreen because that's how it is shipped from the factory. But it is true, the touchscreen does NOT control the iPhone.
