    DELL laptop install, 07 Sebring

Well I recently was given an older dell inspirion 2500. It had win98 on it and 64mb RAM. I upgraded it to match 256mb RAM and installed XP beast edition. Spent quite a few hours configuring software. It has installed IG 4.0, Mappoint 2006, and Delorme street atlas 2009. Pharos Mini GPS unit. I will be tapping into the aux input of the OEM radio. Configured it to use my blackjack as a network adaptor so its online too .

I also installed winamp and VLC for media. Made a black explorer theme. I realized something insanely cool while watching a video and running IG4.0 at the same time. For some odd reason (due to a glitch in video perhaps?) The IG4 map background renders completely translucent over VLC! So basically I can watch a full screen video and have full screen IG rendered directly on top. Its so sweet!

Anyway Here's a teaser of the software

I will have some more pics in the daylight of the "table" mount I constructed out of solid oak earlier in the evening. It slides right over the console and does not interfere with the shifter or any controls. This should be the perfect carPC for a cross country trip. Best part it is removable since my wife won't tolerate a permanent install in her car

I suspect many people would love to have their CarPC affected by the same glitch in video.

Well just got back from a 2000+ mile road trip and the mount and laptop worked out great!

I used it for mp3's, video, and GPS.

Learned mostly all of the keyboard shortcuts before hand so I could operate the computer with minimal attention required.

Ended up using an additional 80 gig 2.5 drive mounted with some 3/4" aluminum angle brackets to hold all the media, and the USB adapter I bought from mp3car.com.

I was going to buy a DC>DC charger I found online but ran out of time so an inverter from walmart handled the charging for now.

Anyway, vacation was awesome! Culture, Beach House, Great Food, Beer, Friends, Frolic, all the staples of a spectacular time. Probably should have just taken my mustang since my wife drove about 3% of the trip ( she hates the manual gearbox ) but oh well, the Sebring averaged about 35mpg so the gas cost of the trip was minimal.

Here are the pics as promised.

Well all I have to say is, at least you dont have standard transmission. It probably wouldnt work for me and my taste. But if it works for you, and you like it, far be it for me or anybody else to say anything bad about your setup.

I should probably add that this was a last minute design and build, I basically had 2 days to build the mount and figure out the wiring. It was just temp too as the wife will not tolerate a PC in her car. The mount is removed now but my dad is going to borrow it as it fits in his car nicely also and he is doing a road trip soon. The mount also makes a great table when the laptop is gone!
