Just an update on this install:

I finally decided to ditch Auto-on with Ignition (using a solenoid as shown in this thread) and modified the install for a simple slide lever for manual power on of the Surface pro 2.

    This is SO MUCH better:

As soon as I get in the vehicle I press the button.

The SP2 boots from Hibernate to Music playing in under 9 seconds. It means that by the time I get the key in the Ignition and the vehicle started, the FE is running, Music or DAB playing (if either had been running) and Sat NAV GPS module and Speed display GPS modules are locked.

NOTE: Auto Hibernate (with Ignition off) operates as normal, the switch is only used to power on.

This install has been faultless, I have not touched the HVAC interface, the rear interface control unit or the iDrive controller since the very first time I installed them.

What I seriously love about this install, it is totally independent from the Tablet or PC, requiring just two connections between the Vehicle and any small Win PC or Tablet. 1 X USB port and 1 X Audio out.

    RAWPWR,

Yes, hardware and FE are working great. Only thing is, I'm playing around with one of those tiny Mini-PC's like in this thread http://www.mp3car.com/general-hardwa...ndows-pcs.html

It's just a matter of unplugging the Surface P2 and plugging one of these in, no other changes needed to the installation. It's a simple swap, exception being I need a screen.

    Reason:

These Mini-PC devices are so small and generate virtually no heat, has a 7AH battery built in. So I can fit it with a screen in an exact copy of the OEM Radio, CD and HVAC enclosure and modified facia, making a simple all in one unit in the dash.

In other words, it looks like an updated Factory Entertainment system with the works, uses the same vehicle connectors as the OEM unit, just two additional plugs added for the trunk mounted controller and iDrive.

Soooo, pics are on hold until I figure out if I'm going to continue with the Surface or do what I described above.

    kewl,
I would suggest going with the later,..... #2.

That looks like a done deal. yeah I know more $$$ for a screen, but now you can use your surface for other things,....not that it really matters much.
