    TouchScreen Laptop as CarPc.

Hello forum. so far i am rolling a "Desktop" CarPc (FullATX), with inverter and 220v PSU, on the back of my trunk. i Also, have a 15.6" lcd monitor (desktop monitor, fitted on the dashboard). I have been through many builds, and i have decided that i will never again use dc-dc converters..
I am planing to build a new CarPc, With main consideration the reliability, and the space it will take ( i am planing to fit it behind the lcd monitor). but since i will not be using a dc-dc converter, the PSU and the Inverter will take up some space...

But i was thinking of this: i have seen some newer laptops, 15.6" that come with build-in multi-touch monitor.. cpu is nothing great, (i3 at 1.7). and i was thinking, if it would be wiser, to just get a laptop like this, turn the screen 360degres (this would kill the insurance) ,and fit it right where my LCD screen is now... my main reasons are those :

    • The Desktop LCD is designed for indoors (Although its still very bright and clear), where the Laptop is designed for outdoors as well.
    • MULTI TOUCH SCREEN. and i cant caps lock this enough... by no means i haven't been able to find a multi touch for that big dimensions... i can only find 4wire resistive, that apart from being too expensive themselves (80euro, when the laptop is at 400), they ruin the view-ability of the screen , and lower the brightness and contrast...
    • as of the reliabilty, i cant think of anything more sure, than a ready-built system...

but i am also considered of this :
    • doing this i will loose the insurance of a brand new Laptop, and repairs on laptop tend to cost too much...
    • it will be hard to be fitted rock solid, since i wont be able to screw bolts on the laptop...

what do you guys think ??? bear in mind, that my car has ALLOT of diy stuff, and many car operations like AC and car windows are literally controlled by the CarPc, so i have to have the most reliable system i can afford...

What about a tablet? I'm thinking specifically a tablet that runs Win8 so you still have the full desktop experience plus multi-touch. Should be able to attach usb hubs for all your devices I'd think... I haven't used one but it does sound as you describe.

yiap. tablet would prety much do the same job! and much easier since i wouldn't have to break anything to make it flat... (like i will have with the laptop). but i dont wont to reduce the size of my screen... and the biggest tablets are about 12" ..

settra i am using a 15.4 lcd in my car but the only reason for that is the 3rd row of sits. to tell you the truth i would prefer a 12" but that's what i got so i did go with that. the dc converter in my opinion would be ideally to get it out of the main cabin in dry spot .

the 15.4 is big enough to install it in a car. and imagine that my car is kind of a small bus

Bang for the buck laptops never win, but tablets can.

so it's relative easy to just install a different screen... i am just having trouble finding something suitable.. :/ (appart from the screen that deephaven posted ofc )

I had the same reaction when I found their screens. The pinch zoom, running apps view, and scrolling are huge for non-embeddable apps. No front end works completely for me without Windows and multitouch is required to make that happen. Made me give my tablet to my kids, they like Timur's rom lol.
