    Surface Pro 3

Looking at putting a Surface Pro 3 in dash flush mount.

Anyone done this looking for mounting ideas?

Pros and Cons about using a Surface Pro 3

Any links to previous threads would be great too.

My idea is to make it removable use it in the house take it out to the car and use it there.

    Thanks

Also this is in a 1951 Ford Custom Build so space and modification to the dash is not an issue.

    Currently doing a Surface pro 2 - here: http://www.mp3car.com/laptops-netboo...pro-2-a-5.html

Main problem for most seems to be turning it on/off - I find it very risky in a vehicle to have anything but the power button as the power control device, I'll be getting to my solution in the next few weeks.

Other problem is no stereo audio input. However audio line (headphone) out it very good quality with no noise. Other wise a USB sound card or DAC. See my thoughts on the dam DAC I tried.

Other things are with one USB port there is a limit to the number of USB devices and HUBS (15 total) before you run out of USB resources.

And finding a way to control backlight for night driving without having to do it manually - may have an answer on that soon.

    Dam nice truck.

Mickz thanks for the input. I will be following your thread closely. I do have time on this build as I lost my car in a fire and am in the process of rebuilding the same car. Is there a reason to not go with a SP3? Besides expense.

Are you working on a solution for power on when vehicle starts?

    What about charging?

I am looking to have the same mount as above. Nice and flush but removable. Any pics of your build?

I already had a SP2, so for now I'm using it - Nice thing about completely redoing my original install - I'm making this new setup completely independent of the Tablet/PC or whatever else comes along. Just needs a USB connection and running an OS that I programmed my FE for/in.

The only thing needed for vehicle starting is the external 5v USB hub power - (I have 12 USB devices - not including HUBS) - You'll see in that thread my simple solution for this and how it's automatically controlled by any tablet or PC that the USB cable is plugged into.

No start-up or shutdown controllers needed - Tablet has it's own power so no external or AUX batteries needed - simple clean install.

I'll be posting pictures of the install soon, I'm still testing every scenario and vehicle condition on the bench - and I mean exhaustive testing - learnt from 5 years of living with a very complex but eventually 99% reliable Car-PC installation.

As far as charging, there is a 12v vehicle charger available. but all I really need is the magnetic plug. I believe that the keyboard with the second battery bank built in, supplies power to the SP2/3 through the keyboard connection? - I'll be looking at that as well when I get the external build finished.

I'm doing this mount a little differently - the SPro will sit on/into a larger recessed aluminium backing plate (heat transfer as well) with plenty of room around it - makes connections simple. The SP will be held in place by a strong (hidden locking) clip in fascia insert, so Tablet removal is quick and simple, any time I change the Tablet - like going to an SP3 when prices drop - I only need to change the fascia insert.
