wow - deja vu all over again!

    search!

it's not like you are the first person to ever ask/wonder about using a laptop - maybe there is a reason that most people who take on this hobby don't go with (IMO) the lame route of a laptop....lol

    Where can you get a p4 2.4gh laptop , with a 60gig hdd for $100?? even without a screen??????/

If i could get one for $100 then maybe id try using it as a carputer... otherwise its too much more expensive to use a laptop..

I would have to say that's a pretty big statement to be made....
I would guess (since there has never been a "poll") that it's more like 60% desktops
and 40% laptops around here... and I can't wait to hear why laptop installs are lame.. lol

And the power of laptop setup you can buy for what a mobo/ram/opus etc. costs you
is very good .... especially when compared to a mini ITX machine. In fact I
believe you spend way more on a desktop setup than an outperforming laptop install.

IMO - part of the attraction for a LOT of people to put a computer in their car is the challenge

just about anyone can put a laptop in their trunk (just the same as a shuttle computer to me) and run a few wires...there is no real challenge there IMO, nothing creative about it, noting intriguing, nothing out of the ordinary....people have been attaching laptops to aux-ins on their decks for a long time.....it's not new and innovative

thus - IMO - it's lame - just like a car audio isntall that's nothing more than a bunch of pannels...

nothing looks more like a hack job to me than a panneled out trunk...it tells me that someone wasn't willing to take the time and try something new and different.....which is lame to me

Wow.. that statement is a complete contradiction of what your saying....
A laptop install needs complete customization when done right... where a
mini-ITX install uses an OPUS or similiar wired up and everything else plugs in.

A laptop install needs the screen removed and power-on/off scheme devised plus
all the other things that you would "plug-in" to a desktop machine.

You act like anyone in this thread that recommends a laptop here is saying to
leave it sit on the passenger seat with a cable slung over to a aux-in jack.

And it is a challenge to put a pc in your vehicle... I don't care what kind it is.
And a shuttle is more like a mini-ITX system than a laptop.. and they
all require the same type of hookups to become a "car stereo"...

Some people just accept different levels as to what a clean install is...

    Desktop install is LAME

Squid is right, you dont just throw the laptop in the boot. Theres more to it when done properly. Removing the screen, keyboard, FDD drive and making a custom case for it. Oh how about SOLDERING the SDC controller on the main board? bet the plug and play desktop guy will wobble there.

Stripping a laptop apart is something a desktop guy will not ever do

Most desktop poeple use this >

    Via M/B
    CDROM
    HDD
    Memory
    Opus PSU
    Premade case
    Liliput

Pretty much plug and play ehh? how boring

man - I guess people can't have their own opponion hu?

I still feel the way I mentioned about laptops...

same as you still feel the way you do about laptops....

differing opponions...it's what makes the world go round....

    accept it, ok?

I accept the fact that some of you prefer laptops, so friggin what?! I have my thoughts on them that go beyond what I have posted here. That's that! So what?! It's not like it's a personal attack on you people!

    lol

Oh come on I'd be inclined to call you lame making statements like that

Seems like a waste of time for me, I'd sooner be building custom circuits to interface with it and writing my own code rather than hacking a laptop to bits, don't think your l33t simply because you can bodge an old laptop at the end of the day they are both pretty similar inside.

Whole point of this post was that someone thinks it's a great easy solution to just throw a laptop under the seat and have done with it. It's not, you've proved it's an option but it's no better an option than using a board, in fact you'll waste a lot of good time after bad just making it work properly when you could have used that time much more productively.

Anyway, why is a laptop so different:

Laptop (comes with CDROM HDD Memory)
    Regulator
Premade case with a few wires hanging out the side for shutdown control
    Liliput

Oh and if you think I'm attacking laptop peeps, I'm not... He's just calling everyone with a 'Desktop install' (Mini-ITX isn't that though, really) lame and I'd usually ignore the trolling but in a bad mood today
