I have a packard bell (i know!) laptop and i have wired into the lid switch, linked this through a realy to my inigition and a switch. when the switch is off the realy is controled by the key - you turn the key off - the pc thinks the lid has been shut - goes into standby. turn the key on - all back to life again.
If you flick the switch the pc stays on all the time.
i have left it in standby on the car battery for a 2 week vacation and all still worked fine but all my usb devices are on powered hubs which switch on and off also, be aware some systems still seem to power the usb devices when in standby and this will drain you battery quicker.

My power button is on a realy also, this is rigged up to a spare ouput on my alarm so it can startup/shutdown when i arm/disarm or i can control it with a button on my key fob. i only use this when windoze bu**ers up and i have to re-boot though.

No because the power is restored before computer gets woken by USB activity.

Some people have bought docking stations for their laptops and soldered relays to the startup switch to signal startup/shutdown.

I would really try to remove the FM modulator from the system, and look along the lines of AUX in on the headunit. I would also look for a 12v to laptop (15 - 26volt) power supply. Try Maplin if you are in the UK, they have them at around £20.
