Thread: TabletPC with Touch Screen (No Stylus Needed)

My concerns would be aesthetics and fabrication to make it look good in the dash. For example, I would assume there is a wireless card built in with a small power switch on the bottom (or front) facet... working around those little parts for fabrication would suck.

Another random thing is space. I assume there is a specific power jack and a dc converter for this thing... where are you going to put them? BETTER and COOLER YET... Is there a docking station that you could modify into your build?

If you could get it working like a removable cd player face, that'd be pretty cool... I'd be very interested to see if you come up with something.

What interesting about this device is that it does not need a stylus or digitizer to work. They have incorporated the same type of transflexive screens we all use on our xenarcs. They even have a full size built in keyboard incorporated into the device.

What do you all think about fabricating a dock like the tc1100 into the car, then have a tablet that one can carry everywhere?

It seems you didn't search the forums very well. There are several of us using tablets in our cars. I've had one in my car since 92. I particularly like the fact that I can take it fron the car to the beach (or to class) write on it using handwriting recognition for notes and then put it back in the car for navigation. Not to mention that I have 1 tablet for three cars. Search the forum for my name and you'll find several discussions about tablets.

Personnally I think there are three key considerations before embarking on a tablet install:

1. Passive touchscreen - I like to use my finger and not have to keep the pen handy, although I've created some installs with electric pens that the end users like better than my passive screeen. I guess its a matter of personal tastes.

2. DOCKING STATION - DOCKING STATION - DOCKING STATION - I can't emphasize enough that you can't just buy any old tablet and create your own (well you could but you'd tire of having to attach several wires each time you get in the vehicle. The dock must as a minimum replicate power, USB, audio in and out (this one is where the current field of tablets all fall short).

3. Lots of memory.
