LCD Install in a Mercedes Sedan

Has anyone seen/done such a thing? I currently have a 1983 300D, but will soon be getting a 90-93 300D (similar setup in the car). I want to install a TFT display in it, and the only option I can come up with is removing the ashtray and head unit, and perhaps moving the climate controls around. The only problem is, I believe the climate controls work entirely on vacuum (much like the rest of the car), and I don't want to run into more trouble than it is worth. Any ideas?

BTW, information about the planned MB3 Project is at http://www.wtfisthat.net, just navigate through to read, then click on the MB3 project.

    I have a 1989 190D and i'm going to put a 10.4 inch TFT.

i'm going to cut the dash righ after the controls, so the headunit and the ahstray will be gone and then i'll just mold fiberglass, like ARBY and ALLENRUBLE did. Photos of allen's Photos of arby

if you're going to do it like i am the you'll only need to mess with the controls if you a put a LCD larger than 10". And the best part is that behind the LCD will be plenty of room to put the entire PC, so no need to fill the trunk, just put in there. Well this at least in my case but i believe that in yours will work too, since your car is even bigger than mine ]

If you can wait about a month or two I will be selling LCD Kits especially made for Mercedes. They are full Video LCD kits that replace the center console or kits so you can mount your own LCD in them. I’m working on a custom Mercedes parts Web page. Mainly for enthusiast that can never find those hard to find custom Benz parts that they only seem to sell in Japan. It’s going to be mainly non profit... I my self am figuring a way to get my 8.4 in a S600 and my fiancée has a 190e that looks like will be much simpler. What I did was bought I spare center console off EBay ,and Im going to either use that to practice hacking on it and see how clean looking I can get it. The reason im not going to use the kit my self is im hoping to relocate the climate controll totaly. Ill keep you posted.

stefan, its been a while, but im just now getting back into my project.

After a long time of searching, test-driving, and negotiating, I now have my 1992 300 class sedan, though its an e class, not a diesel (growing ever more popular - and expensive - by the day).

So anyway, how goes it? Did you get the LCD in?

Well I had the Website up for awhile and decided to not host my own page> because i didn’t want to deal with hackers or writing in Linux. So I decided to have it hosted, well the company that hosted my page got hacked. So i didn’t sell the goods for very long on the web. Most the goods sold to locals or is still sitting in my garage, and i never bothered rebuilding the web page.
I just got married this last weekend and now that the wedding deal is done. I ll be focusing on my many different projects more. I can give the phone number of the place that sells these LCD consoles, but they only speak Japanese. That’s where my bilingual buddy came in handy. I know the center console on the E class is very similar to my console also. I was going to relocate my Climate controll to the sunglass compartment lid. and maybe relocate a vent. I see about 5 different options. but the first thing is actually taking the center console out to see whats easly relocated and whats not. Ill defiantly keep you posted.

I've got a 1985 Mercedes 300D. I installed two 5.6" visor monitors for driver and passenger and it works great. My Foobar controls are via push buttons mounted into the wood trim below the stick and mouse is via touchpad custom mounted into the same wood trim. Looks great, works fine, and when I need the screens I just pull the visor(s) down. For my new Mercedes, a 1986 300SDL, I'll be trying to keep it as stock as possible. Good luck with your project.

I have a 1987 Mercedes 190E, and think about removing the vents (on the center console) and/or putting something in front of them.
