Funny that my first post should begin with a statement that I am not affiliated with gooddeals18.com, but honestly I am not. I have been lurking for weeks gathering data on LCDs, transflective upgrades, and touchscreens. Great info so far!
I ordered the SHK804 8" model the first week in August for $163.99 plus shipping ($181.25 total) and received prompt e-mail notifications. Unit shipped to my house in under a week. If works well inside but haven't viewed it in the car. The touchscreen works well under WinXP but had problems in Gentoo live install CD (need proper driver config here).
For those of you who have yet to tear down the SHK804 unit, be careful with the touchscreen cable. It is located on the left side of the unit (front view) and very short so it is easy to torque the board connector up. There are four corner screws plus side edge-snap grooves holding the front and rear halves together.
The touchscreen is attached to the front bezel via retaining clips AND double-sided tape. Fortunately, only two of the strip sides were exposed (top and bottom since clips hold the left and right sides). I worked from the top middle with light force and used a retractable blade to work the tape free.
The inverter and controller boards have A0550-INV0 and A0530-G0/S0 markings. The main controller board has a TORiSAN SLA4028F4L part. The panel has the following sticker "B/L 080SV03-3 1355 021106 ST3". Based upon some brief Googling, I think this is a SANYO unit? I saw references to
Samsung in earlier posts so maybe that is for the 10.4" unit only, or just the LCD?
I plan on contacting FPD Design to see if it is worth a transflective upgrade. Maybe not? I am also following the 3M thread to determine if the film would be applicable to this unit. I thought about opening the panel to inspect existing films, but I currently don't have the time or skill to venture down that rabbit hole. My gut tells me it is better to leave it to the pros.
