Running windows XP professional with no problems. Most screens run off of the serial or LPT port on a system, which XP fully supports. You won't have any problems with the OS. (BTW- You can get a USB->Serial adapter for less than $15, accomplishing what you described.)

Are the serial to usb adapters workin though with the plugins for winamp?

Serial to USB adapters include software to emulate a serial port under windows. So yes- any software that is designed to work with serial lcds will work with Serial/USB adapters.
BTW-I take it that you've used all of your existing serial ports- If you have not, just use them. There's no need for the adapter.

Yeah, many of the new boards have removed the serial ports completely.

This one any good?
I was thinking of getting that, I'd much rather have a VFD but I'm not about to spend $100 on a screen when I already have a nice LCD, this is just for when I don't want to setup the 6.4" screen.

Yep. The Crystalfontz LCD's seem to be a good display and widely supported by the available software out there. Of course you'll get the one with the backlight, right?!! I ordered mine from www.matrixorbital.com because it included other features that I wanted... Check them out if you haven't already. I purchased the LK204-25PC Limited edition because of the GPO's- They can be used to drive relays, LED's, etc.
