    Matching the screen to a controller

    I would like to compare what I think I know about this to what you guys know.

    Hypothetically speaking, when I come across a screen and find some info like a datasheet, what do I need to look for to match a compatible controller (either VGA or RCA input)?

    I'm thinking just match the screens voltage with the controller (ie 3.3V screen -> 3.3V controller and 5V screen -> 5V controller) then just match up the pinouts?

    Obviously the quality you get is dictated by the bit rating or the controller and screen.

    Am I close, or wwaaaaaayy wide of the mark?

    As far as controller...I have no idea...I got my information from lists of displays and compatible controllers.

    As far as quality...there are lots of quality factors such as:

    Viewing angle (varies...180 is cool tho

    Brightness (to me, 350 nits is just enough for sunlight)

    Contrast ratio (300:1 is good)

    "bit rating": I would never settle for anything than an 18 bit display unless you want your friends to laugh at you while you play movies and the actors' faces are orange and yellow.

    Yeah, I understand the Sharp LQ9d161 + Digital view (in other words, a DennisK setup) cuts it, because the controller extrapolates colour information, so you get away with 12bit for DVD. (18bit is still better though).

    I've not heard of any other setup doing this though.

    You need to be aware of how difficult it is to get the cable to connect the screen to the controller. Those Hirose connecters are really small, and very hard to solder to.

    Personally, I am pretty happy with my DennisK setup. If I really wanted, I could probably go find another screen, cause rewiring an existing Hirose cable is really easy.

    I had been working on getting a single board computer with onboard LCD support (chips & tech) to talk to a sharp screen that I had for around 8 months and I finally got them talking... It was a pain in my *** and I dont really like the final results (color limitation of the SBC) but I did it and it was very satisfying, I would be happy to help you even though I am in no way an expert or anything... I bought one of the Hirose cables and cut it in half and used a breadboard to make all my connections...
