Double-din screen that actually fits double-din opening?

Hi there,

I am building an in-dash PC and my car has a standard double-din opening of 7" X 4" (measured at 179mm X 101 mm on my car). I want the whole PC to have the ability to slide in and out like a factory or aftermarket system without removing the dash. I have looked at the various touchscreens out there and I can't seem to find one that will fit in this opening. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that I can NOT cut or modify the opening. This is not an option. It simply has to fit...

Please dispute the following if your info is better than mine:

Lilliput 7" out of housing (LCD only) = 165mm X 106mm (6.5" X 4 3/16") <--- too tall by 5mm
Xenarc 7" out of housing (LCD only) = 171mm X 108mm <--- too tall by 7mm

It seems that height is the limiting factor here. They are all a few millimeters too tall for a double din opening.

EDIT:

6.5 " is the ONLY way to go for me. I cannot use the 7" as they do not fit in the 101mm height.

Supplier found for 6.5" LCD, but no touch panel.

Anyone know a source for 6.5" touchpanel only???

You need a 6.5" screen.

Look at digitalww.com and you will see the DWW-650 or something. DOuble din with dvd drive. That is your only hope other than motorized 1din.

Of course you could just buy a G4 (6.5" screen too) if you want it to be just like a HU.

I already have the computer with Commell LS-371 3.5" motherboard, Solid State Drive, T7400 Core 2, etc. so buying a unit like that is not really an option. I don't mind fabbing a housing for a 6.5" I just can't find one that will fit. Any ideas on suppliers for 6.5" screens?

6.5" screens arent made for general use in VGA quality.

You can source them usually LCD only but in higher quantities.

I tihnk your best bet if you dont want to get the DWW unit which is just the screen in a case with a dvd drive, is to look at the Subaru double din enclosure for 7" screens. I think it has an overhang because 7" will not fit in a 6.5" opening.

I thought the DWW-6500 unit had more than just screen and DVD. I thought it had a built in amp and other stuff...

Plus $650 just to pull the screen out seems a bit extreme.

Anyone have exact measurements on the WRX double-din housing?

It does: Preamp, tuner, rear camera input, remote; I believe 2k1' was mentioning it to use as-is.

It does have all those things, but you dont need to use them.

I dont see why you wouldnt if you had them, but you dont have to.

Don't think using it as-is will work for me as I am going for a all-in-one slide out double-din car PC. I would have to open it up and strip the amp out and get my motherboard, etc into it. I have nice external amps for powering the speakers and I am getting the USB radio they sell here.

My only problem is the screen...

I've seen a lot of NEAR double din designs on this forum and other places. I'm surprised no one has been able to get a hold of a screen that will fit...

you want a great screen? try toshibas ltm06c310, with transflective upgrade from fpd design group. this is a transflective 6.3" 1024x768 screen, in a league of it's own...

expensive but awesome if your restricted to that opening. this is an open frame lcd & will still need a controller inverter etc., just the screen itself is in the $600 range, but the best you can get for that opening I think.

Thanks turbocad. That is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for.

Unfortunately the height on it is 113mm. Still 12 mm too large.

Anyone else have any others?
