Ideas on a good 7 inch, fully motorized, VGA, touch screen

I'm in the process of building my first carputer and I want to do it right. So I'm reading over the forums and I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I have a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee, pretty stock, nothing when it comes to nav or factory premium sound. Its a single DIN factory unit that I will be replacing. And I'm looking for a 7 inch, fully motorized, VGA, touch screen. It doens't have to have a TV or AM/FM tuner because I won't be using it. I'm just looking for a sweet screen. I want it to be a nice quality screen, one that will make me glad I built my carputer and that I won't have to replace in llike six months. Any recommendations or help is greatly appreciated?

    Thanks,

    -Miles

As far as i'm concerned, NONE of the in-dash touchscreens are "good".
    Why?
They're comparatively new products that rely on a mechanical structure to open/close. Those structures are first-generation and have some problems.
Search the forums here and you'll find lots of users that have had issues with the mechanicals in the in-dash screens, particularly the motorized units.

No, xenarc doesn't make a motorized screen. They make a manual spring-loaded in-dash, the 700IDT. Some people have had issues with it, but far fewer than any other model that I've seen.

Frankly, the fitment of the in-dash units is crap. Most of them stick out of the dash an inch or more. Sure, you can mod them to improve the fit.. But doesn't that defeat the purpose of purchasing an in-dash in the first place?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I have a similar car, it is 1.5 din correct? Not sure what model you have but there is plenty of space in mine to put a 10.4" lcd landscape... might have to move some of the HVAC controls, but not too far...

I saw an older posting last night where someone else with a very similar Jeep as mine just moved everything down and put a nice stand alone screen in, and it looked really good. So I think thats what I'm going to do, it may take a little more work but it will look better in the long run. And besides, everyone gives the motorized screens bad reviews and I don't want to be another one of those guys. Any tips or thoughts on that idea?

Do you have heated seats? That control is towards the bottom - will that be a problem for you? Also have you thought of controling the HVAC from the carputer? I don't know much about it, but it has been done and might be kinda cool...

You might wanna start a project work log page and put up some pictures, I am sure a bunch of people will be willing to help you with ideas, but it is hard when there aren't any pictures.

No heated seats for me, I have the "Un-Limited" edition. The only thing below my HVAC controls are cig lighter plug, accessory plug, and an empty storage slot. I'm getting together with a buddy next week and we are going to brainstorm and see what we can do. The idea about the controlling the HVAC is awesome. And as soon as I get some quality pics I will start the project page.
