Need help hacking 2 17" laptops with 1680x1050 native screens

I have 2 Compaq X6000s that are basically dead - I want to harvest the parts from them and use them however possible. However, I know some LVDS backlight inverters are compatible with selective screens. Can anyone recommend a good place to start?

The first thing to do is to read the type ID from the back side of the screen. That determines all possibilities to drive. Search datasheet or at least pinout for that.
Do not bother too much about the backlight, that is independent.
Is it two-tube or four-tube version? (how many white duoble-pin connectors are on the inverter panel?

HP, Compaq are BIIIIIG companies. Main function is to produce and force you to buy.
They won't do anything for you...you just waste your time...
The display is more likely a product of another company.
If you got the type (eg: lm174sn1 or so - manufacturer code, size indicator, additional type codes) search the internet. I strongly believe, it is a double-LVDS drive with 8 twisted wire pairs...

But if you want to use it as a monitor, you have to get a VGA-LVDS converter board, eg. from an LCD monitor with broken display.

There are some VGA-LVDS converters on ebay I was looking at - $35 apiece. I may do that if it is the easiest thing to do. I'll have these taken apart this week, I need a new set of screwdrivers first.

Be sure about the number of pairs, because there are lvds converters for smaller laptop displays, that works with 4 pairs, and the converter for tft monitors that has 8 pairs.
