    6.5" vs. 8.4"

I was hoping to gather some opinions on two LCD configurations I have been looking at:

    Screen One:
    6.5" XGA-1024x768
    500:1 Contrast
    25ms Response
    650cd/m^2 Brightness
    Antireflective Coating
    Viewing angles Up: 80 , down: 60, right: 80 , left:80.
    Capacitive USB Touch Screen
    LED BACKLIGHT!

    Screen Two:
    8.4" SVGA-800x600
    600:1 Contrast
    25ms Response
    650cd/m^2 Brightness
    Antireflective Coating
    Viewing angles Up: 80 , down: 60, right: 80 , left:80.
    Capacitive USB Touch Screen
    Dual-CCFL BACKLIGHT

The price difference between the two is about $20USD (cost of the CCFL inverter), so it really doesnt weigh in.

Both would be put into a custom console/dashboard, probably SLS.

I like the idea of a LED Backlight, but 6.5" is very small, however it is an XGA resolution. However a 8.4" is substantially bigger but its less resolution. The extra 50nits of brightness could help, however CCFL do have a lifetime 1/2 of the LED backlight.

For me at the moment, they are tied in the race..compact high resolution or alternatively, bigger screen, lower resolution.

I am swinging towards the 8.4" simply because of size and the uC graphics driver I want to use is a max 800x600 output.

What do you guys think is the best option?

    SLS as in Cadillac SLS?

7" is pretty popular, and about as small as I'd go. You can probably fine one wth the same or better specs (they are specs for a reason).

If it is a Caddy, I had a 7" in mine NP. 8.4 was a tad too big, but anything can be done with enough time and cash.

By SLS I mean selective laser sintering, a rapid prototype process used to make one off plastic components.

The 7" panels I looked at were all 800x480 (e.g. WVGA) or 640x480 (and not very bright). The problems with this were, firstly the manufacturer doesn't have a capacitive touch screen (which is a big must for me) available in that size. Secondly the LVDS Scaler module doesn't support Widescreen resolutions.

And finally the microcontroller I am using to drive the primary input will only support QVGA,VGA and SVGA resoultions (e.g. standard aspect ratios). Even though the 6.5" is XGA the scaler would take care of it and it would probably look ok.

I also looked into the 7" cased-screens available (LinITX). They were similar cost, not as bright and only had a resistive touch screen.

Oh you know perusing through some suppliers that I use for a University project I stumbled across it.

Think there would be interest in the community for a high-res, super bright, capacitive touch screen lcd that would fit in a double-din spot?

    Here are the panel datasheets:

    8.4"

the capacitive touch screen+controller, LVDS controller, backlight controller are all sourced from different companies.
