Answering my own question for everyone else's info. I can be done with slight modification to both cases, both ways.
Basically, I am looking to upgrade my install with an LED model 629. I had it set up to use the CCFL model. I used the front of the bezel so the screen and button holes would be perfect. I want to know if I can put the LED model's "insides" into the case of the previous version, and vice versa. Has anyone tried this, or compared the internals close enough to know?

I had to snap off a few screw studs on the back bezel. The 08 model has a small circuit board for the barrel connector, which I had to leave out because there was nowhere to screw it too. This is fine since I can get power through the SKS connector. And on the inside of the front bezel, I had to sand down the small bump that runs the length of the screen on the right (looking at it from inside) so the touchscreen wasn't permanently depressed on that side. The small metal tabs that hold the LCD in had to be flatted since the new LCD is slimmer. It should be noted that the LCD doesn't line up perfectly when put in the different case. This is something that is tolerable for me, at least until I decide to redo my install to fit my upgraded screen. All of the above applies to putting and 08 screen in an 07 bezel.
To do the reverse was much easier. A few screw studs needed to come off again. And the square hole for the SKS connector needed to be slightly larger. A quick file did the trick. Again, the LCDs don't line up perfectly.
