Developed by Funai Electric Advanced Applied Technology Research Institute Inc., the Dynamic ECD does not need a backlight like those used in reflective LCDs. It consumes 0.16 milliwatt of electricity per sq. centimeter, just 1 per cent as much as LCDs, while realizing clarity on a par with characters printed on paper.
The new display has 80 per cent reflectivity, compared with 50 per cent for reflective LCDs, making it easy to see even in sunlight. Because it does not use thin-film transistors, it also costs about one-third as much as LCDs.
The company hopes to commercialize the product in 2009 and expects it to first find application in portable handsets and remote controls for consumer electronic devices. It will initially cultivate demand for 7- to 14-inch displays, with plans to develop larger models in the future.
It ultimately hopes to make the device an alternative to the LCDs currently used in mobile phones and e-books. It is targeting 200-300 million yen in sales annually.
