What is the lifespan of a touchscreen?

Just trying to get an idea...is this something I will need to replace every few years because it will stop working? If so, I will build my dash so that I can remove it. I'm custom fabbing the screen into my dash so I want it to look stock but also be removable without too much trouble if I ever have to replace it.

Is this necessary or shouldn't I worry about it?

Like anything you're going to get varying answers. My first touchscreen (a lilliput) lasted about a year and then stopped working. I'm only about 6 months into screen #2 (a xenarc this time around).

Xenarc's website sets life span by the number of screen touches. "Life span of 35,000,000 touches versus 1,000,000 touches from 4-wire resistive" I have no idea if that's really the case.

Xenarc's lifespan relates only to the touchscreen I think, so the 35,000,000 touches is for the input portion. The screen itself is completely independent of this and has a separate lifespan. I've had mine (700TSV) in the car now for 2 years through extreme hot (Atlanta) and extreme cold (Calgary) and it's still working as good as the day I installed it.

For a more general answer, I hear the Lilliputs usually last about a year and have never heard of a Xenarc failing. So you should be good for a few years at least, depends on how often you change vehicles.

I think you will come across lemons and more likely those will get noted by frustrated users in forums like these, but most will probably be good. However, I started with a Xenarc and it crapped out after about a year or so, maybe up to 2 years, I can't remember. I now have a NEC touchscreen custom adjusted for antiglare that has been alive for me about a year and a half, but I've only been using it continuously for probably only half that time. It's doing well since I finished my install this summer/fall *KNOCK ON WOOD*

My first one lasted about a year. I waited a couple years then got another one about 6 months ago.

Some have reported that they delaminate due to heat but YMMV. I don't recall seeing too many issues with them in cold weather.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. I will definitely be building it to be removable then. The main concern that I have is if I sell the car after a couple years when it's working fine and then it croaks 2 weeks later and the person who bought the car doesn't know how to fix it. I would like to avoid that situation!

This is in a brand new 08 350Z so I don't anticipate selling anytime soon, but just in case...

If you sell the car and the new owner doesn't know how to modify VB code, take the computer out. You don't want that headache.

It's a bigger headache to take the computer out...lol - believe me I know how to sell modded cars, the last car I sold was 550hp mustang and I think the only thing left stock was the throttle cable

It's got nothing to do with modifying the motor, anybody who buys a 550 horsepower mustang likely has the knowledge to maintain it. I doubt the same guy knows how to debug 1000 lines of VB code on a custom computer. It's just a suggestion when someone buys the car and then wonders why nothing works in 6 months, I'm definitely taking mine out when I sell.
