    GPS as a screen?

If you walk into best buy and look around at the GPS units, most of them are around $200, and I'm assuming they have technology in them that makes them perfectly readable in the sunlight. Why are these so much cheaper than standard touch screens?

Is it possible to hack one of these guys up to allow for VGA or DVI or any standardized input for that matter?

They are cheap because they are not VGA. It does not initially appear that they are lower resolution, but they are MUCH lower resolution than VGA. The screen colors and font sizes are carefully matched to the screen size.

Not suitable for a car PC, nor would they be easy to interface with.

They are cheap because they are mass produced. You can buy a 20" monitor at resolutions far higher than the 800x480 we are used to for less money.

If there were a market for this we could buy 7-8 inch transflective lcds with resolutions ~=800x600 for $140. The market just doesn't exist so competition is scarce.

You're probably right. I wonder if there still wouldn't be a price difference between a VGA or a video screen. If there wasn't, wouldn't they use the higher res screens? The displays would be much, much crisper and allow for more detail.

screen resolution may be low but ...

I have a Uniden Maptrax 436 GPS unit. It's awesome. It only has 272x480 resolution on its touchscreen but it more than suffices.

You can see the unit's tech-specs at http://www.uniden.co.nz/NEW_ZEALAND/p_trax436_index.asp

I guess maybe my needs are more simple than what some of you are doing: I'm just looking to integrate control of:

    1. mobile phone via bluetooth (already possible with this GPS)
    2. iPod Nano (although this GPS unit supports MP3 playback via MMC slot - yet to test that and see what the interface is like and whether or not it supports smart-playlists)
    3. FM radio
    4. GPS (obviously already accomplished)

All that's really missing is the FM radio element. Although it would be nice if I could have a full iTunes type player too.

    I don't need any other high-resolution fancy-shmancy stuff.

And I'm looking to keep the unit quite discrete so the small 4.3" screen size is perfect for me. The reason for this is that I'm building an AC Cobra and modern-day technology just doesn't look right in this type of car - and I want to keep the focus on the beauty of the car and lovely roar of those twin-pipe! I will probably have to have something custom-fitted to hide whatever solution I put in.

The unit does have a mini-jack for microphone / input, mini USB and also a standard 3.5mm headphone socket. I'm guessing that maybe an FM receiver could be plugged into the microphone socket but not sure how I would chose the source?

So if anyone can work out how to do this would be much appreciated ;o)
