nobody ever said that it wouldn't work. everything you wrote in your first post is correct, and you did a nice job with your write up (except for your excessive use of CAPS ). but you left out an important fact; that doing that will turn their expensive DVD/NAV headunit (you specifically referenced the Pioneer AVIC series) into the equivilent of a $50 low-resolution composite monitor.

composite video (RCA) is good for video, but pretty much useless for carPC's. anybody that owns a touchscreen headunit that wants a carPC would be better off selling it on eBay/craigslist and using that money to buy a VGA monitor.

how-to guides like this are directed at newbies, who in this case might read it and think that they can buy a $50 monitor and a $25 touchscreen kit off eBay and have a nice touchscreen monitor for their carPC. but we both know that it's not that simple. I wasn't trying to start an argument with you, insult you, or discredit your post; I simply added some important information to help out the newbies that may have otherwise gotten false hope from your OP.

I think your all on the wrong level, Or maybe writing this when your all half a sleep.

He was simply showing how your kids in the back of the car can have control over selecting a movie or songs with making the low res screen a touch screen.

Yes ideally you would want vga screens allround, But mostly in the back head rest are used for video games or entertainment. Not web browsing/writing documents/emails.

So i would easily have the VGA touchscreen in the centre console and have two low res touch enabled screens in the head rest. But this can work if you plan on having multple screens. Ones with a set use, Say a simple dual screen built into the instrument cluster to replace the old analogue dials.

But this all comes down todo doing your own software/skins to make the colors match the screen.

Overall i think this is a great little kit, It will have many uses in and outside of the car.

well it surely looks quite nice in my back seats and I would place a buffalo nickle that you could'nt tell the difference of "quality" unless you exited to the desktop. I sincerly appreciate the feedback. I mentioned the Avic because thats the only model I know off hand. but it would'nt reuin it as it's competly reversable. This was more targeted towards the s-video headrest setup though only gave Avic as a possible soltion for the gentlmen that had one who wanted touch panel for PC.
You guys are right, it would be better to sell that $700 AVIc and buy a VGA monitor but I would argue all month on how this will save money for the backseats. or for those people that have a headrest monitor with RCA inputs only who want to "convert to touch and connect to PC with S-Video out only. I am horrible at writing instructions or descibing things so maybe someone can clear up the confusion. This is perfect for Movie's and Nav or pretty much any front end with 800x600 it looks fine I honestly would'nt recommend it if it looked horrible. try it on your home tv. Like I said it looks great in front end not on desktop as desktop is small text and icon's. The Skins specifically DFX are very clear easily seen without small text.

Now if only my Alpine IVA-D310 would do all of this....

But alas I am better off selling it on Ebay and just buying a VGA touch screen in the first place.

Not hardly, only we didn't have the benefit of hindsight like you. After reading all the subsequent discussion then it became clear to you because there is no way you can extrapulate not even the explanation that YOU gave, just by reading the OP - Now i can meet you out back if you want!

Just be sure that these overlays that you get on eBay or otherwise don't get to hot!!!
I had one in my CarPC(see my sig), and I let it get too hot in the sun, and it fried the controller... But that's what I get for being a dumb@$$ and letting it sit in the sun! LOL

I have no clue what's going on anymore!!!

fried in the sun. Strange indeed. How I learned of these overlays was I had a Kenwood KVT-M715 touchscreen, I was removing before winter few years back and accidently dropped it on ground. I searched on Partstore.com and found the original replacement for $155.. (7") needless to say I bought a overlay for $40 cut & rewired the panel direct to the board on the Kenwood as it had a built in controller with auto calibration.. worked perfect! Now I recommend them for anything touch. I am planning on a 15" touch screen for the center rear entertainment. DVI interface so quality will be sharp.
    15" DVI LCD $175
    15" Overlay $90
    look from mp3 members @ next show....priceless!
