As it turns out, the problem was not in the LCD, but in the user! I didn't have the original AC wall adapter and I had burnt out the fuse in the car adapter. I bought a selectable voltage adapter at the store and being the cheap SOB that I am, bought the cheapest one they had.
After 3 days of aggravation, I replaced the fuse in the car adapter and the screen powered on without a problem! It then occurred to me to check the AC adapter and sure enough, it maxed out at 500 mA. Had I used my engineering knowledge that I paid to obtain, I could have done the math from the label on the screen: 12V, 8W power
I = P/V --> I = 8/12 = .667 A = 667 mA ::
I'm such a moron... but hopefully this will help someone else!
