    EBY701 power help

ok I have a EBY701 and it is acting really odd it i turn it on the will act like it is coming on but doesn't display anything or as soon as power comes on it will simply start flashing the red power light both problems just started I have it running from a 800MA generic 12v regulator as i can't locate the egg that came with it and it puts just enough pull on the PSU that the motherboard won't post

any ideas on the lcd would be great

    Thanks,
    yonu

So that's definitely a power problem. Sounds like it could be one of 2 problems: input voltage and/or output voltage too low. For input I mean, if the car battery is fairly drained and not providing enough voltage to the regulator then you'll have a low voltage output on the regulator. Similarly if the regulator is not properly rated for the screen, even if the battery voltage is ok, you have the same problem. When this happened to me before, the screen would initially show some life, but there would not be enough power to keep the lcd powered. I troubleshooted this using a multimeter and off I went.

It makes sense that this may be a car battery problem if your MB won't post. The power for the screen is not drawn from the MB, as the usb is only for the touchscreen controller. If input voltage is off then your MB PSU wouldn't provide enough power.

A multimeter is your best friend for your problem. Use that to test voltages at the various points and you'll be good.

The power adapter you have, may not have been designed for constant use and could have worn down to the point where it is no longer supplying the rated amperage. Also, the temperatures are getting hotter out, so the efficiency of everything is going down and everything could be wanting more amperage and at the same time, the adapter may be providing less amperage. I checked my EBY 701 a while back with a multimeter, and remember it sucking in about 700 mA. It jumped up higher during turn on though. I would test it using some other power supply or maybe bring it in the house and run it off a normal PC's power supply just to test it out and figure out if power is really the issue.

well i did try the AC brick that I used to get it when I was molding it into the panel and it does the same thing it will work a couple times then it won't the most common thing I am noticing is the power led on the screen blinking on and off slowly

    any thought

how hot is the room you're working in?

It's sounding more like a problem with the screen though...

Yeah 70 degrees wouldn't be an issue. If you said 120 degrees in a hot car, we would have nailed it =). How many mA does the AC adapter output?
