Not enough power. Are you connecting these to an unpowered hub?

Basically the same then... Some MOBOs use "unpowered hub" principe on the USB "hubs" connected. Strange, since it's easy to give the 5V needed...

If you try with a powered USB hub, your problems should go away

Motherboards should be able to produce 500mA continuous to all ports at the same time. But don't rule out other possibilities. You're describing problems with high power devices, but they are also USB 2.0 bulk transfer and the touchscreen is probably 1.1 so that's another factor. You could also be taxing the PSU. An external hub is still a good place to start though.
