So this is a hobbyist forum, when people say it can't be done, they mean it isn't feasible.
The resizing operation, Reference 1, using tooling as developed by Tannas Electronics takes less than two hours in labor using custom-designed tooling costing less than $25,000.00. All of the original display glass, TAB circuits and LC material, except for the parts cut off, are preserved. Additionally, the process preserves the original performance.
if you think spending $25000 is reasonable go for it. It's terchnically possible to split an atom, but for purposes of the forum I would say it can't be done

I actually agree........... i guess when it comes to cost effectiveness and practicallity, it cant be done. If you want to spend a boat load of money to cut the LCD, when you can just buy 3 displays, a dual output graphics card, a way to make it look like one display and call it a day.

Portabuddy, research the company that claim such patent pending services... They are apparently the only company in the world that can do this, the patent (theory of) is actually owned by BAE and Tannas was dragged through a massive dispute as they claimed to own the patent lol.

In the end BAE gave a license to them, more than likely on the basis that they'd fall over face first (BAE developed the idea for military use, an idea).

Tannas said that they would continue their research and development but don't seem to have done anything so far (last activity from them was in 2001?).

The automotive industry, to date, use screens already in the market place and they simply design around them. The same goes for all other industries.

Anyway if you think this company still exists and can do something that you want doing, go for it and let us know how you get on.

Btw: My research in the company isn't extensive to say the least, took all of 2 minutes usinig a search engine... If you find anything solid feel free to inform us.

Ok well i will research this further. also have a few screens to test with that have issues, like fried lights, blurry display and a constant flickering.

All fixable problems but that leaves me with free LCD's. My brothers company sinply threw out the screens. So i can test with them. Im not planning on engeneering anything. this was actully supposto be a short cut to get a good final product.

You guys have helped alot. thank you.

    Merc's offerings

Some other companies offering, this uses two small LCD screens set behind the speedo.

    Simple Audi LCD

Custom dash, will be a single square LCD with plexiglass surround or something similar to give the organic look.

IMO I would go for the 2nd design, that way you've got a physical dial as well as the digitals, which unless you spend a fortune like car manufacturers do, will be based on a PC's VGA signal which means you'll have to wait for the PC to boot and display the data which takes time.

I know what you mean. thats why i wanted to get the quickest booting system that i could and more then likely not run windows. my friend and i wanted to do a joint venture, he is a programming geniuse and i can make cool stuff.

He really really wanted to create his own software, but with cheap powerfull software like dashcommander that wouldnt really be absolutely necessary.

I would rather do-away with all guages to be replaces with screens. AQnd i understand about the boot time, im ok with this. Im worried about if something goes wrong. then im left with no guages. im not planning on any type of IC's to replace the pc, that would be too much work and even thoug i go have a buddy that Might be able to help, im not prepaired to spend the time.

It would all just be so much easyer if i could just cut down a screen but im sure i would be able to work around it.

I do like that second design and the last one too...

The other issue is the insurance (I know in the UK if you told them you'd changed your dials to non-oem spec screens they'd terminate the policy there and then lol)... Also our MOT (yearly road worthy examinations) includes the dials, not sure how that would effect the outcome... Might want to check that too, be a shame to go to all the effort then end up with a car that's not road legal!
