Help on displays.... back light does not stay on.

I just scored four Audiovox FPE2705 27inch LCD TVs. My job was going to throw them away because all you hear is sound but no picture. When we had them sent to the shop, they quoted almost $200.00 to $500.00 per TV. For $300.00 it was cheaper to just buy new ones.

Anyways, so I took them home, connected my PS2 to the TV and turned it on. First the Audiovox logo comes on clear as day, but after its gone, the back light shuts off. I know there is an image because I can hold a bright LED light to it and see image and hear sound. I am thinking that maybe the control board is messed up and shutting off the back light after a momment in time. My idea was to add a second inverter that is seperate from the control board. I really dont care about brightness settings, as long as I can see the image. Any ideas on how I go about this? Could I maybe use a PICO PSU to power the back lights?

    sounds like a firmware issue...

try to find the service manual or info to get into the control menus.

or as you say, re-wire the backlight somehow

Most inverter boards enter a failsafe mode when something doesn't check out. We have had several NEC monitors at work appear to go out when it was simply a capacitor at fault. If the inverter board is integrated to the mainboard of the display and you can't find anything obvious you might be in a pickle. If that is true I would look at switching it over to LED backlit if you like to hack stuff. There's a good topic on converting a 619 to LED on here that may be able to help your issue.

On the capacitor issue here a pic of bad capacitors I have found in monitors destined for the scrap heap at work. You can see two of the three have breached and the third is domed.

After replacing these three caps I ended up with this (monitor on the right)

I think its the inverter boards. Its not any of the caps, but the actual transformers that send the power to the 14 CCFL bulbs in the TV. Upon investigation, the transformer are made of very thin wire that is coiled around. These TVs are on 24/7, so I have to assume that over time the wires simply gave out. Another thing that made me think its the LCD inverter is the fact that there is still an image, just no light to make it show.

I took the screen apart..... It has so many components, its not even funny. The LCD inverter is buried under all of it, so I had to take out over 70 screws to get to it. The part costs $169.00 plus shipping to replace, if thats actually the issue. Most likely It will come out to about 180.00 per TV, which is good since I know they cost my job about 1,000.00 to buy. Just wondering what I should do with them, lol..... I know I want 2 for my room (one for my TV and one for my PC), but I wonder what I should do with the other 2. Maybe a can create a 4 TV setup so I can monitor my progress on taking over the world?
